Tsunami:
In December
2004, as you all know, a Tsunami-wave struck Phuket. The TEFL centre
was not affected because it is located in Phuket city, a few kilometres
inland. We all helped to clean up, find people, and looked after
children. If you are worried about doing a course in Phuket, don't
be. All the beaches have been cleaned up and all missing persons
have been found. The only thing you still see, are building sites,
where hotels are build up or repaired. People here are starting
to come to terms with the disaster and life is going on. Your presence
as a TEFL student in Phuket is a great help to the people and the
children! First of all, you are bringing some money to the locals,
by going to restaurants and buying some goods, because the 2nd disaster
after Tsunami struck, was that all the tourists stayed away, their
only source of income.
The religion:
You might think that the Thais are emotionally strong, because
here in Phuket you see all smiling faces again. Their strong religious
belief, the Buddhism helps them to come to terms with the loss
psychologically a lot quicker. They believe for example, that
the lost one is re-born again soon and that Buddha had a reason
to take that person from the earth.
Ban Phe area
and TEFL centre was not affected by the Tsunami at all, as it
is located further north of Thailand.
