There
are so many TEFL courses - what do I have to watch out for?
The
accredited TESOL Certificate has one of the highest standing in
the industry in terms of gaining employment.
Unfortunately,
anybody can set up a TEFL school. Although there are many good
schools around, you have to check weather they are controlled
by the IATQUO (International Association of TESOL Qualifying Organizations).
TEFL International is. Most employers will only accept a TEFL
or TESOL certificate by schools overseen by the IATQUO.
Make sure
that the English teacher training course contains 120 hours of
face to face teaching and at least 6 hours of teaching practise.
It is the requirement for a fully accredited TEFL or TESOL qualification.
Be aware of
weekend TEFL courses or correspondence courses. We all know that
they are cheap, but in the end you may only get a voluntary teaching
job, or a job as an assistant teacher. The money you save in the
beginning, you will loose out 10 times on your wages later on!
So, why work for €200 pocket money and lodging, when you
can earn €1000 a month and live in a nice house provided
by the school?
If anyone
tells you that you can learn how to teach in one weekend, you
should be suspicious. Can you learn swimming in a weekend, and
then jump off a boat and swim 2 km to the shore?
Many people
went into that "trap". After realising that the correspondence
or weekend course was a waste of time and money, they came to
us in order to gain a proper qualification and excellent employment.
TEFL
International, is the worlds largest non-profit organisation to
train English teachers and well known in the industry. Employers
approach TEFL in order to recruit teachers. They have a lot of
excellent jobs on their books, making many job placements possible
already during the course.
Watch out
on a TEFL course, that your teaching practise is with "real"
students - this means people who can't speak English, in an environment
where you will be teaching in the future.
TEFL International
Education centres are located in the countries where the jobs
are. Not only do you study in a beautiful, well selected location
in Thailand, China, Korea, Egypt, Italy, Spain, France or New
Zealand. (Naturally, your face to face tuition is done in English)
Your teaching
practise will be in a real school with real students - just as
you would have in the job. Not only that, the accreditation requires
only 6 hours of class room teaching practise. This is often not
enough to walk into a job straight after a TEFL course. This is
why we offer 10-20 hours of teaching practise, in a real "job
environment", in a foreign country, with real students, preparing
you extremely well for your job!
There are
TEFL schools about who claim to guarantee a job. However, these
jobs are either on a voluntary basis, or you have to pay a placement
fee. Included in our course price is a job placement assistance
program, helping you to find the job you want and which is well
paid. There is no extra placement fee! And, we give you life-long
job guidance, absolutely free of charge. So, if you want to work
in another country later on, you can always come back and see
what we have on our books!
Watch out
for hidden costs! What may look cheaper in the internet, could
cost you double when you get there! Many schools won't tell you
in advance that you have to pay examination fees, extra for your
grammar course, transportation to teaching practise, photocopying,
for books, paper, pens and whatever else administration fee.
With us, this
is all included! There are no hidden extras! The only thing you
may have to bring is a pen - but even those we will supply!
Our fees at
TEFL International include everything. The only thing you have
to buy or cook are your meals - and even they are included at
some locations!
Who
are your teachers?
Instructors
employed by TEFL have years of experience. Dave Hopkins the senior
education officer in Thailand was there right after the war teaching
English in Vietnam!
Course
administered by highly trained staff with many years of teaching
experience, and extensive industry as well as local knowledge
Your fellow
students come from many countries on many continents
Your
support staff is extremely helpful, courteous and will assist
you with whatever you need
TESOL
Diploma Course
TEFL
International also offers a Diploma course which opens doors to
higher level (and better paid) jobs. This is open to people with
3 years or more of English teaching experience and qualifications.
